Titleflix Privacy Policy

Overview

Titleflix is a Chrome extension that renames Netflix browser tabs to the show or movie being played, for example “Dark: S1:E2 Lies - Netflix”, so tabs and bookmarks say what they are. This privacy policy explains how the extension handles your information.

The Short Version

Titleflix sends nothing anywhere. It reads the title of what is playing from the Netflix page, uses it only to set the tab’s title, and keeps it only in that tab’s memory. The Service Provider (Dogu Yilmaz) operates no server, receives no data, and runs no analytics. The only things the extension saves are your three settings.

Information the Developer Collects

None. The extension has no backend. It makes no network requests and contains no analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or tracking of any kind.

Information Read on Your Device

On www.netflix.com pages, the extension reads information that is already in the page to work out what is playing:

  • The show or movie title, season, episode number and episode title from Netflix’s player data, which Netflix has already loaded in the page
  • The title shown in the player controls or on the pause screen
  • The video id in the page address (/watch/...), to know which video a title belongs to

This is used only to set the tab’s title. It stays in the tab’s memory while the tab is open and is never written to storage, sent anywhere, or shared with anyone. The extension keeps no history of pages or videos. In Chrome Web Store terms this is “website content”, handled on your device only.

Local Data Storage

The extension stores three preferences using Chrome’s storage API:

  • Rename Netflix tabs: on or off
  • Season, episode and episode name: whether the title includes them
  • “- Netflix” at the end: whether the suffix is added

Important Notes

  • The settings are kept in Chrome’s sync storage. If Chrome Sync is turned on, Google syncs them between your own devices as part of Chrome Sync. The developer never receives them.
  • No viewing or browsing data is stored.
  • Version 1.x kept the title of the video you were watching in local extension storage. Version 2.0 no longer does this and deletes that stored value when it is installed or updated.
  • Uninstalling the extension deletes the settings.

Permissions Explained

Host permission (https://www.netflix.com/\*)

  • Purpose: to read what is playing and set the tab’s title on Netflix
  • Usage: the extension’s scripts run only on www.netflix.com pages
  • Limitation: it cannot see or change any other website

storage

  • Purpose: to save the three settings listed above
  • Usage: Chrome’s sync storage
  • Limitation: no viewing or browsing data is stored

scripting

  • Purpose: to start Titleflix in Netflix tabs that were already open when it was installed or updated, so they work without a reload
  • Usage: right after install or update, or when you open the popup in such a tab
  • Limitation: it only runs Titleflix’s own bundled files, and only on Netflix tabs

How Titleflix Works

  1. You play something on Netflix.
  2. The extension reads its title from Netflix’s player data, or from the player controls or pause screen if needed.
  3. It sets the tab’s title and puts it back if Netflix resets it.
  4. When you leave the video or turn Titleflix off, Netflix’s own title comes back.

Reporting Problems

The popup’s Report a problem link opens a new GitHub issue form, pre-filled with the Titleflix version, your browser’s user-agent string and the popup’s status. It does not include what you are watching. Nothing is sent unless you choose to submit the issue on GitHub, where GitHub’s privacy policy applies.

Remote Code

The extension uses no remote code. All of its JavaScript is bundled in the package, and it makes no network requests.

Third-Party Services

The extension uses no third-party services, analytics, advertising or tracking tools.

Effect on Netflix

Titleflix only changes the browser tab’s title. It does not:

  • Access your Netflix account or credentials
  • Change playback or any other Netflix feature
  • Send requests to Netflix or anyone else

Data Security

Nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is stored beyond the three settings, so there is no developer-side store of your data to breach.

Children’s Privacy

The extension does not collect information from anyone, including children under the age of 13.

International Users

The extension works for users worldwide. Since the developer collects no data, no cross-border transfer to the developer occurs.

Your Rights

Because the developer holds none of your data, there is nothing on the developer’s side to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port. Your three settings are removed when you uninstall the extension.

Uninstalling Titleflix

To remove all traces of the extension:

  1. Go to chrome://extensions/
  2. Find Titleflix and click “Remove”
  3. Its stored settings are deleted automatically

If this privacy policy changes, the Service Provider will:

  • Update the “Last Updated” date above
  • Publish the updated policy at this address
  • Reflect the change through the Chrome Web Store update process

Compliance

This privacy policy is designed to comply with:

  • Chrome Web Store Developer Program Policies
  • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
  • California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)
  • Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

The developer processes no personal data, so no legal basis is required on the developer’s side. The title of what is playing is read and used only inside your browser.
